    Summer Lawn Care

    Last updated 11 months ago

Now that the summer breeze is blowing in, it’s important to learn how to best handle your lawn care needs during the heat of the season.

    Summer Lawn Care Tips:

    • Mowing Height:
      • Adjusting mowing height is the most important practice to prepare for hot weather.  It is suggested that you raise the height up to 3 inches or as high as your mower will allow.  This encourages deeper roots that will dry out slower.
      • Lawn growth will begin to slow as the weather gets drier and hotter, so adjust your mowing schedule accordingly.
    • Grass Clippings:
      • The Clippings you create when mowing should be redistributed across your lawn in order to supply it with nutrients and additional shade to encourage future growth.
      • Certain mulching mowers do this naturally.
    • Lawn Watering:
      • If you decide to water, be sure to do so in the early hours so that the soil can absorb the moisture before the sun has a chance to dry it up.
      • Most lawns consist of cool-season lawn grasses that naturally slow down and go dormant in the heat of summer.  You must either decide to water lawns all summer as needed to keep them green or allow them to go dormant.
      • It is important not to water them back to green conditions after they have turned brown!  This stresses the plant and depletes their energy reserves.
    • Seeding:
      • Any patches not growing properly should be seeded accordingly.
      • Be patient and maintain a proper water schedule, as reseeding will cause the soil to be overworked.
    • Weeding:
      • Try to remove any patches of weeds immediately to prevent spreading.
      • Spot treating with a commercial weed control product can be effective.
      • The best overall method of controlling weeds is a thick well maintained lawn, as the wind-blown seeds will have a harder time germinating.
